Goodbye, Wasted Time

I’ve gotten into a bad habit.

The minute I walk in the door, I grab the remote and turn on the tv. Then, I flip through the channels; my viewing of choice could be anything on the E-Channel, TLC, a random reality show or the news. I’m not saying that any of these things are bad (or good for that matter); they just become my background noise while I go about doing dishes, laundry, cooking or whatever is on my “to-do” list.

The trouble is, I periodically stop what I’m doing and just watch the mind-numbing program. The next thing you know, the day is gone and wasted. Although, I have discovered that those pop-culture stories & other random factoids have been instrumental in defeating worthy opponents in various trivia games… not that winning is important to me.

Anyway.

Enter the TV Turn-Off Challenge, which is not a complete boycott (because that is just unrealistic at this point) but rather limiting viewing time to one hour each day. I know, it sounds kind of harsh but I’m eager to see how much more I can get done when I’m not zoning out during “What Not to Wear” or “The Soup”.

While I didn't make any formal New Year’s resolutions, this is my resolution for the remainder of March. I figure tackling this “vice” one month at a time is a good strategy. I know I can do it because I lived for an entire year without television and I only sort of missed it when my favorite Thursday night show was on.

While I sort of cringe at the thought of sharing my super guilty pleasures with you (see below), I know some of you watch these shows too – even if you’ll never admit it!

THE 1st WEEK GAME PLAN:

* Monday – Dancing with the Stars (I’m going to fudge on this one tonight because it’s the 2-hour premiere. But, it’s the first day and I figure I should ease my way into this challenge, right?!)
* Tuesday – The Biggest Loser
* Wednesday – Lost
* Thursday – The Office/30 Rock
* Friday through Sunday – none! (I don’t have any shows I “have” to see on these days, so perhaps I won’t watch anything… we’ll see.)

Wish me luck!

Good luck! SOme of those are my fav shows as well. We actually have chosen not to have cable, and we haven't had TV in about 3 years. If there is something I really want to watch (because yes I have my shows....The Hills, The City, Biggest Loser, Project Runway, and The Bachelor) I just watch episodes online. 30 commercial clips is all. And no I don't always watch those allthe time (that is a lot). LOL Its amazing how much more time you have when you aren't watching tv though.

I wish you SO much luck with this. I hear people who say they don't even HAVE A TV!!! and I wonder how do they do it? I will share with you my guilty pleasures...
Monday, House
Tuesday, NCIS and if I remember I'll watch the Duggars on TLC and then beat myself up for being such a horrible mother compared to Michelle....that's another story
Wednesday, NOTHING!!
Thursday, the office:)
Friday, Nothing
Saturday nothing unless there is a NCIS or House marathon:)
Sunday, I do listen to Rock of LOve while I am sitting at the computer (which is a whole other vice in itself). Those girls are SO stupid! I got sucked in while I was going to school and doing my homework while it was on and now I just HAVE to see if Brett finds love:)
Really, Michelle, good luck!!! I hope you are feeling good and I wish you were here or I was there!

Good luck! You have to schedule in some time to watch TLC's "A Baby Story", watch until right before she goes into labor and then turn it off and take a nap.

That was my schedule the entire time I was pregnant with Colin--it worked well for me! ;-)

So... I watched only the last 4 of Dancing because Cloris was on and Marie before that (I'm talking 4 shows). I watch Office and 30.. if the Mr isn't around as he doesn't like them... can't watch the others as we don't get ABC anymore (I am shaking my fist in the air cursing Dish Network)... no this isn't to say that I don't watch other shows. My DVR is programed and know to record 2 show at the same time. That's all I will admit to....

I can honestly say that I'm not hooked any tv shows, but I think it's probably because I teach aerobics practically every night. But if I were to join the challenge I would make a goal to limit Lucy's viewing time to only a few hours a day. We've got cinderella, hairspray and many other favorites memorized because they're on so much.

By the way, I like the baby ticker. Now I just need to visit your blog to know how far along you are!

I didn't realize that this would hit such a chord with people. I guess that I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one that is trying to "turn off" my tv!

HA! Try turning off your computer! I lasted 2 days!
